Is windows updates enough to keep me safe?

Clients sometimes ask, “If I run Windows update weekly, and have an anti-virus, aren’t I protected from online threats” The answer I’m afraid is simply NO!

A recent document released by Kaspersky, a russian anti-virus and anti-malware security firm with a great reputation states that Microsoft products didn’t even make the top 10 of threats posed to PC users. How is that possible? The real issue is the 3rd party applications that we install on TOP of our Microsoft windows operating system, Things like Adobe FAdobe Shockwave, Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader, Apple Quicktime and iTunes and the less used Winamp. These are applications that Microsofts Patching and updates we see SO often aren’t fixing, these are all applications that don’t automatically patch themselves to protect you!

At outhouse it we take a holistic approach (Security from start to finish) to providing security at the desktop level, we not only patch and monitor your Anti-virus and anti-spyware, we monitor and apply Microsoft patches and as Kaspersky suggests we’re also patching your 3rd party applications, the “top 10” of threats as above. Desktop level PC Security is not just a single layered approach for us, we take security seriously and encourage our clients to layer security at both the desktop and server levels.

Here’s our Layers:

1. Hardware firewall at the network level with content and security filtering

2. Server level anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spam/phishing filtering

3. Desktop level software firewall

4. Desktop level anti-spyware, anti-virus and anti-malware + Optional anti-spam

5. Desktop level Microsoft patching and monitoring

6. Desktop level 3rd party (Java, Adobe, Apple) application patching and monitoring.

Our goal is to ensure even if one layer of security fails you, the threat won’t reach you or your data.

At Outhouse IT Our focus is on your success, and keeping you free from viruses, spyware, malware and threats to your security is our job.

Is your current IT provider layering your IT Security so no one breach “brings down the ship” If you aren’t sure, take the time to ask. Or better yet, we’d be happy to come in and provide an IT Services review and audit at no charge, so you’ll know where you stand.
